01Where does the money come from?
It comes from money the directors have built up in pensions, old or current, brought together into one pension fund. The rules allow the pension fund to lend to the directors' company, which repays it, with interest, over up to five years. It is permitted under regulatory rules.
02Why are there no credit checks?
The lender is your own pension fund, not a bank. The people who run it (usually you and your fellow directors) decide whether to make the loan. They still need to act responsibly, and the loan must meet the regulatory rules and be properly secured, but there is no external credit search.
03How much can my company borrow?
Between £25,000 and £500,000, but never more than 50% of the pension fund's value when the loan is made. For example, a pension fund worth £300,000 could lend up to £150,000.
04I have not set up a pension fund yet. Can I still apply?
Yes. We can set up the pension fund for your company and move your existing pensions into it. Once the pension fund is registered and funded, it can lend to your company. Registration can take several weeks, so it is worth starting early.
05What security is required?
Every loan must be secured against something worth at least the loan plus interest. We use either a charge over the company's assets or the directors' shares. If the company already has a bank debenture, we will look at whether a share charge is the better route. We will confirm which suits your company and that its value is enough.
06Is the interest tax-deductible?
Interest paid by a company on a genuine business loan is generally a deductible expense for Corporation Tax. The interest is paid into your own pension fund, where it grows free of tax. A specialist can talk you through the position for your company.
07What can the money be used for?
Any genuine business purpose of your company: equipment, stock, working capital, premises improvements or growth plans. It cannot be used to pay money to directors personally.
08Is this regulated by the FCA?
No. This is a loan to your company, not a regulated personal loan. We are registered with HMRC to administer occupational pension funds in the UK, and we do not give regulated financial advice.
